If you live in Surrey and you've been thinking about meal prep, this guide covers everything: how it works, whether it's worth it, and what to look for. No fluff, just the practical information that actually helps you decide.

What Is Meal Prep, Really?

Meal prep means having your meals cooked and ready ahead of time so you're not making decisions about food when you're tired, hungry, or short on time. Done right, it takes the daily effort out of eating well. You open the fridge, heat something up, and eat a genuinely nutritious meal in about five minutes.

There are two main versions of meal prep. The first is doing it yourself, dedicating a few hours on Sunday to batch cooking for the week. The second is ordering from a local meal prep kitchen like The Whole Bowl, where a team does all the cooking and you just receive the meals.

Most people who try both end up preferring the second option. Not because cooking is bad, but because the time, planning, and mental load add up fast. When your Sunday is gone and you've got containers everywhere, meal prep starts to feel like a second job.

Why Surrey Residents Are Choosing Meal Prep

Surrey is one of the fastest-growing cities in BC, and one of the busiest. Long commutes, long work days, and busy family schedules leave very little time or energy for cooking healthy food from scratch every night. Meal prep fixes that.

The residents who get the most out of it tend to fall into a few categories:

Fitness-focused individuals who are tracking macros, trying to hit protein targets, or working with a trainer. Hitting your nutrition goals consistently is nearly impossible when you're improvising meals every day. Meal prep takes the guesswork out completely.

Busy professionals who would otherwise end up defaulting to fast food or skipping meals. Having a fridge full of ready-to-eat, macro-balanced food makes the healthy choice the easy choice.

Families who want nutritious meals on weekday evenings without an hour of cooking after work. Meal prep covers those nights when there's no time and no energy.

What to Look for in a Meal Prep Service in Surrey

Not all meal prep is the same. Here's what matters when you're choosing a service:

Fresh, not frozen. Some services prepare meals weeks in advance and freeze them. Fresh meals, made in the last day or two and refrigerated, are nutritionally superior and taste noticeably better. Always ask.

Macro-balanced portions. If you're ordering for health or fitness reasons, you want meals built around specific protein, carb, and fat ratios. A service that just makes food without thinking about nutrition isn't doing the job properly.

Local and transparent. Knowing where your food comes from matters. A local Surrey kitchen that you can visit, that knows your name, and that will adjust your order for allergies or dietary needs is a very different thing from a national delivery company that ships frozen boxes.

No subscription required. Some services lock you into weekly orders whether you need them or not. A good meal prep service lets you order on your schedule.

What Does Meal Prep Cost in Surrey?

The honest answer is that it depends on what you're comparing it to. Relative to cooking everything yourself, a quality meal prep service costs more per meal. Relative to eating out, grabbing food while you're running around, or ordering delivery apps regularly, meal prep is almost always cheaper and a lot healthier.

At The Whole Bowl, our individual grab-and-go bowls are available at our Surrey storefront, and meal prep packages start from $12/meal at the 100-meal tier. For most people ordering in bulk, the math works out well, especially once you factor in the time saved on planning, shopping, and cooking.
